As we have discussed, technology opportunities are finite-lived, not perpetuities. But the parallel idea is that such an estimate can be an approximate way of estimating the value of the remaining technology life beyond the specifically forecast period.
The straightforward approach is simply to create a financial model that extends over all the years of the projected technology life, as bound by the shorter of the underlying IP rights or the useful life of the technology itself either in its operational benefits or market demand. In the examples given, we did exactly this by projecting to the 20th year, showing the forecast revenues declining to GCF = $3 million in the 19th year and $0 in the 20th whereupon the technology or its IP, or both, have been assumed to have no remaining license value to its seller.
